Don’t Wait To Do The Hard Things
Written by: Lisa L.
Resistance will always be there. It’s all what you decide to do with it… look at the hill as too steep, or it isn’t that steep, but I’ll just wait until it’s warmer, or until I get my good shoes, so THEN I’ll be ready for the climb…
OR
Look at the resistance as a challenge and just friggin GO!
Athlete-wise, do you think that guy in your gym waited until he was 85kgs of bullet-proof shredded muscle before he tried to string muscle ups?
OR
Did he just think, my pull ups are good, my C2B is okay… “Coach, gimme some drills, I wanna get this”.
The super jacked mum (who is rumoured to BE wonder woman) waited for the day she had a perfect lunch, a full night’s sleep and was top female in the affiliate before she nailed her handstand walk?
OR
Did she just think “I’m trying it, Whitney spot me for a sec!”
Neither probably succeeded straight away (though don’t you just love those punks that get it first go LOL!) But you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, and this applies to anything, not just your handstands.
Not to get all ‘life advice’ on you, but there are never going to be perfect conditions, you will more than likely never feel ready, you will fail a bunch of times probably and resistance will always be there. Try the handstand, accept the job interview, google house prices near the beach….
Sometimes it’s just ‘leave the damn house and go outside’.
In our sport (and lives) there is always more, there is always faster, stronger, always a harder skill to learn… so we need to stay in a progressive mindset and be open to change, not constantly braced to fight it.
Fear of failure is real, and it’s okay, it’s not added to your resume if you fall on your head trying to walk on your hands. Or that time you tried to PB your snatch, lost it and the barbell hit the chalk bucket (though it could definitely end up on Tik Tok).
But trying and failing is learning. Never trying for fear of failing… that’s comfort.
They all say that thing about life beginning outside your comfort zone, so if you want to brace for a fight, battle discomfort, not change.
Try the handstand walk, Whitney will spot you :)
